Data notes: This visualization uses publicly available catalog data from Space-Track (SATCAT) and Jonathan McDowell's General Catalog. It does not include classified military objects, which likely number in the thousands. Debris counts reflect cataloged trackable objects (generally >10cm); the actual population of small debris is orders of magnitude larger.
Some debris appears at the parent object's launch date rather than the actual breakup event date. Where available, the catalog date from McDowell's database is used to correct this, but some historical events may still show debris spikes at incorrect dates.
Country codes reflect the registering state at time of launch, not current operator. Soviet-era (SU) objects are distinct from Russian Federation (RU) post-1991 launches. Hardware type breakdowns are only available for constellations with metadata in our database — some may show as a single block.
